» What is Edema?

Edema occurs when there is retention of fluids in the tiny spaces that separate cells in the body. This normally occurs in the ankles, feet and lower legs but edema can also happen anywhere else in the body. The treatment for edema depends on the cause.

Edema can be the body's signal that something is not right. If you have swollen feet or swelling anywhere on your body, it would be a very good idea to see a doctor as soon as possible. Only a doctor can diagnosis the causes of edema. However, if you already have been diagnosed then you might want to try some of the edema relieving treatments that are available.

» Causes of Edema

There are many factors in determining the causes of edema. Birth control pills, retaining too much salt, eating too much high carbohydrate food, certain types of heart conditions and a variety of other factors can be the causes of this condition. Some of these conditions are more serious than others so it is best to always play it safe and get to a doctor as soon as you can if you notice that you have swollen feet or any abnormal swelling anywhere else on your body.

» Edema Symptoms

A gradual swelling of the lower extremities usually means that edema is occurring. Hypertension, frequent urination, weight gain and swollen hands can be other symptoms that edema is occurring.

Edema may be less noticeable in people who are overweight. However, you can usually notice edema because of the way that it can make your skin feel tighter than normal. If you suspect that edema is occurring you should make an appointment to see your doctor as soon as possible so that a treatment plan can be started.

» Treatment for Edema

Elevating your legs will start the process of relieving edema. During this treatment you should make sure that your legs are elevated above the level of your heart. There are also some products that you can use for the relief of swollen feet. Some of these products include support stockings, good fitting shoes and leg wedges. Avoid sitting in one place for too long and limit your salt intake.

Get advice from your doctor. Since it can have a variety of causes, edema is not a condition to be taken lightly. It can be one of the symptoms that something is seriously wrong with your circulatory system. The only way to find out for sure is to seek medical treatment.
