» Metatarsalgia - Ball of Foot Pain
Metatarsalgia is first noticed as a pain in the ball of the foot. There are a variety of causes for this condition but the best news is that there are also a variety of treatments. Read on for more information or see the metatarsalgia treatment options on the right.
» Metatarsalgia - Symptoms
If you feel an intense pain in the ball of your foot then you may have metatarsalgia. The metatarsals are the long bones in the feet which run perpendicular to the body. These are the bones that are affected because they carry much of the load when we walk, run or go about our daily activities. The weight load is normally balanced but when this balance gets out of whack, metatarsalgia can be the result.
» Metatarsalgia - Causes
In most cases, metatarsalgia is caused by an imbalance of weight distribution in the metatarsals, or, an imbalance due to a deformity of these long, sensitive bone structures. Another cause of metatarsalgia can be diabetes. Deformities can be caused by complications with arthritis, fractures and degenerative conditions that appear in the joints. Even natural aging can put a person more at risk for metatarsalgia. People who are extremely active also run a higher risk.
» Metatarsalgia - Treatments
There are different ways to go about treating metatarsalgia and the treatment methods are largely dependent upon the cause of the condition. In general, you should try to use gel insoles or shoe inserts so that your weight can be more evenly spread out across the bottom of your foot. Metatarsal pads can be helpful as well. If these types of treatments don't work for you then you should work with your podiatrist or family doctor in order to find a solution that is right for you.
