» Shin Splint Pain

Shin splints usually occur when you change your level of activity. If you've recently started an exercise plan that includes running or walking then you could be in danger of developing shin splints. The trick is to just not overdo your exercise routine. It's easier to prevent shin splints than it is to cure the condition.

» Causes of Shin Splints

The tibialis anterior muscle is the main muscle that is used to flex your foot up toward the sky. It has a tendency to get overused during strenuous activities and exercise. When it gets over used, the symptoms of shin splints will appear. Other causes can include tight calves, flat feet and shoes that do not provide the proper amount of support.

» Treatments for Shin Splints

The first thing that you will want to do is give your feet a rest. Treatments that you can use include compression and elevation techniques in conjunction with the use of an ice pack. You will want to discontinue the activity which caused the shin splints. Instead, you can take up an aerobic activity that is non weight bearing or one that is very low impact such as swimming or stationery bike riding. You should see your doctor if the shin splints do not respond to any of your efforts as other more serious conditions could exist.
